Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation

PPWR – We Think Packaging Further

What is the PPWR?

The new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is the EU packaging regulation that will soon be binding for all member states.
Its goal: reduce packaging waste, strengthen recycling, and close material loops.

UPA-204

From its entry into force (expected in 2026), only packaging that:

is recyclable,

is clearly labelled, and

contributes demonstrably to the circular economy

may be placed on the EU market.
By 2040, the EU aims to reduce packaging waste by 15% – an ambitious but essential goal.

UPA PACK is PPWR-ready

At UPA PACK, we believe that sustainable packaging doesn’t start with new laws.
For years, we have relied on materials and processes that are fully recyclable – without compromising stability or performance.

Our products are made from high-density solid board, a single-material paper product based on recycled fibers.

The adhesive used is water-soluble and therefore harmless for recycling.

All our products can thus be easily returned to the paper recycling loop.

UPA-184

Part of the Solution – Not the Problem

Packaging made from solid board makes a major contribution to conserving resources.
It:

protects goods reliably against transport damage,

reduces material use compared to alternatives,

consists of renewable raw materials,

and can be recycled multiple times.

Therefore, paper cores, edge protectors and interlayers from UPA PACK are not part of the packaging problem – they are part of the solution.
Efficient transport packaging prevents damage, returns and CO₂-intensive reshipments.

In short: choosing sustainable transport protection saves resources across the board.

Our Products in the PPWR Context

UPA-188

Paper Cores

Our cores are made of 100% recycled paper.
They are recyclable according to EN 13430 / ISO 18604, use a water-soluble adhesive, and contain no plastic or foil coatings.
After use, they can be disposed of via the paper recycling stream.

Disposal

Simply via the paper bin or industrial paper recycling – no separation required.

UPA-89

Interlayers

Our interlayers made of solid board replace plastic sheets or foam films.
They are recyclable, biodegradable, and made from recycled fibers.

Disposal

Via the paper bin or cardboard collection system.

UPA-67

Intermediate layers

Our solid cardboard interlayers replace plastic sheets or foam films.
They are recyclable, biodegradable, and made from recycled fibers.

Disposal

About the paper bin or the collection system for cardboard packaging.

Labelling & Transparency

Our packaging is designed in accordance with EN 13430 / ISO 18604.
Each product can be marked with a material code (e.g., PAP 20) confirming its recyclability.
This ensures transparency throughout the supply chain – from production to reprocessing.

Disposal

Like cardboard boxes – via the paper recycling stream.
Please dispose of dry and clean.

Conclusion

The PPWR will change the European packaging market – but not our philosophy.
We have always produced with responsibility, efficiency, and respect for resources.

UPA PACK – Sustainable transport protection, PPWR-compliant and future-proof.
